About this deal

The underlay should be then cut to shape to fit the stairs. As you will see this will mean you will end up with pieces of underlay for the treads that are wider at one end than the other.

For curved stairs, such as a spiral staircase, you will simply need to account for the differences in widths at either edge of your runner where one side of the tread is longer than the other – this will require being very careful with adding up your measurements to ensure you get the right length of stair runner! Tapi Top Tip: if you measure the widest part of your stair where the runner will sit and multiply this by the number of stairs (plus that extra 30 cm just in case) you’ll get your curved stair runner length.Continue this process down your stairs, ensuring that if you have to join two stair runners together, folding the unfinished edges underneath and stapling along the fold. Secure the bottom with staples You should be concentrating on a length of about 600mm from the corner of the room at the moment. Turn the blade round and cut the 600mm along the crease until you have reached the corner. Once the first step has been done, repeat the above techniques and work your way down to the bottom. Don’t put gripper on the bottom step though. Step 3 – Cut and Fix Underlay

The Waterfall method is in a way quite similar to the French Cap, however it firstly differs in that it is fitted in one piece rather than cut and fitted individually to each tread.

Repairs: If your stairs are in rough condition, adding carpet over them can help to hide the damage The depth of the nose (the often-protruding edge of the stairs – if you’re nose does not protrude, then this will be covered by the tread measurement) Also, if it’s not installed correctly it can easily move underfoot which can be very dangerous, especially for the young and the elderly, considering also it’s on the stairs. Any falls could be extremely serious!

To secure carpet in the angle between tread and riser, use a carpet bolsterand a hammer to push the carpet into the teeth of the gripper strips. If your stairs and landing carpets are different, you may prefer to take the stair carpet up and over the top step, then put a joining strip between the two carpets. You’ll have to decide which finish works best for your situation. There are 2 different methods of installing carpet on a staircase; the French Cap, Hollywood or cap-and-band as it’s also known and also the waterfall method. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. French Cap or Hollywood Carpet Install Methods If there are difficult to reach areas with a hammer – like under a radiator – you can glue the gripper into place with an adhesive like this Evo-Stik Gripfill Max adhesive from B&Q. Remember to remove the fixing nails first. 4. Add your underlay If you are using a stair runner that leaves a gap at either side, as mentioned the fitting instructions are pretty much the same – just make sure the gripper strips are the correct width. It will help if you mark a line on each step that you can follow to ensure you have an equal amount of space at each side of the runner. Step 1 – Measure up and PrepareOnce measured for one step, add at least an inch onto this measurement, and times by the number of steps in the staircase. If you are carpeting the landing too, measure this and add on to your stair measurement. For each pair, use a tape measure to measure from the inside of the gripper on the tread down to the gripper fixed to the riser below it and then cut a piece of underlay to size. A more traditional form of underlay, felt underlay provides excellent cushioning as well as a reasonable level of noise reduction and warmth. Felt underlays are typically made of wool, making them a cheaper option that’s easier to lay.”
