About this deal

It certainly allows the singer to move around the mic in a similar way to the 58, while being nicer-sounding and slightly more feedback resistant. It looks great on stage, and every musician I put it in front of was excited to sing into it, which says a lot.

If I was in a band, I would probably go with the 441, but since I'm mostly doing wedding cerimonies and private events, I think that maybe a condenser would be nicer to bring more detail in the vocals. The Earthworks SR314 is a vocal microphone suited to all ranges of voice recording and performance and is ideally suited to stage, recording, broadcast, podcasting and voiceovers. The only slight con is that due to the plosive and sibilant sensitivity you must master your mic technique. Also, a dodgy mic lead will often pop loudly if intermittent, since some mics pop loudly, and even turn off for a few moments, even with very short cable drop-outs. There were a couple of instances of the pop-screen letting a few plosives through, but for the most part, it held up decently well. It’s a welcome and inviting sound that allows me to add some body to my tenor voice without losing the EW window of clarity. A highpass filter on the SR314 set to a frequency of 160 Hz helped but did not cure the problem, and we had to swap it out for a different microphone. Prepolarized condenser element coupled to a dedicated wideband transformerless preamplifier that requires standard 24/48V phantom power. It's a philosophy which has won their omnidirectional studio mics many admirers, especially among engineers who favour a natural drum sound, and it's one that Earthworks have carried through into their range of vocal mics. The microphone was designed to produce a uniform frequency response out to 90 degrees off-axis, and a consistent low-frequency response even when used at varying distances.

I found that the SR314 provided the most natural-sounding response when a vocalist worked the microphone from around 8 to 10 inches away from the microphone grille. An extended flat frequency response and a focus on fast clean impulse response set the Earthworks SR314 apart. Finding a non-drunk or stoned UK sound man that does his job properly is hard enough - about one out of ten gigs I'd be anywhere close to being satisfied with the sound. I've yet to put it through its paces on recording other than voice, but I can imagine it doing very well on cello, flutes and other melody instruments. The naturally bright sound puts the vocalist comfortably forward in the mix, which should create less work for the FOH engineer.

It presents vocals with a natural, balanced response and maintains articulation without ever sounding strident. The Earthworks brand has long been associated with the production of high-quality condenser microphones designed for use not only in the studio and on stage, but for measurement purposes, as well.It has a slight coloration in the lower-mids that’s flattering to vocalists who need a bit of help in that region, and the microphone is capable of producing plenty of mojo in the low end, particularly when used up-close (within a few inches). At that point, you're really looking at the least-worst sonic result captured, whilst getting the performance.
