This 50th Anniversary Edition, published in 2018 to celebrate 50 years of this much-loved cookbook, contains hundreds of original recipes plus 50 new recipes that reflect the wealth of ingredients available in modern supermarkets and sure to become firm family favourites. When we was poor, we purchased this cookbook from our milkman for a couple of pounds at his suggestion! I still use this book and it was worth every penny to see my hubby tucking in with a happy smile on his face. With over 3 million sales it is a firm favourite, with Celebrity MasterChef and Bake Off winners listed among its fans! Lactose intolerance or an allergy to milk means avoiding cream, butter, milk, cheese, yoghurt, and ice cream as well as many prepared foods to which lactose is added such as bread, cereal, salad dressings, cake mixes, frozen meals.

As you can imagine, I have tested and tasted a fair few recipes over the past fifteen (is it really that long? My copy of the book dates to 1983 when our first child was born and it remains one of my go to recipe books. I was also given a beautiful Dairy Diary Gift set which is for 2012 so obviously, I haven’t used it yet but I have looked through it thoroughly and love it, there are also some great recipes in the pages of the larger diary. If you or someone in your family cannot tolerate lactose this book will make catering for their needs simple and straightforward with so many meals to choose from.

The book is easy to follow and the recipies are great with conventional cooking styles and microwave alternative on most recipes. So, in total, a whopping 950 easy-to-follow recipes that cover every possible eventuality from speedy weekday suppers to festive feasts, and everything in between – from solo suppers to cocktail parties. I’ve had a few Dairy Diaries over the years and they always contain some lovely recipes, so I was delighted to be sent the 2012 edition.In fact, it was voted one of the most reliable cookbooks of all time by BBC Good Food readers and many other cookbooks have followed in its famous footsteps.

The cover and spine broke away and certain well thumbed pages were were grease stained, and torn but still it staggered on, as did we!

I still make the Dairy Diary Pina Colada cheesecake, which is a killer on calories but absolutely lush! The recipe itself was really easy to follow and the results were fabulous as you can see from the photos.
