About this deal

If you have large pieces of plant matter, like roots and leaves, first remove this material with a colander placed over a bowl, with the bowl catching the coloured liquid. If you are wanting to get into more serious ink/dye making with kids, I would suggest you get a pan that you *never* use for cooking food in.

Rusty nails in vinegar make an iron vinegar solution which reacts with the tannic acid in the black walnut husks. Organized by color, and featuring lovely minimalist photography throughout, Make Ink combines science, art, and craft to instill the basics of ink making and demonstrate the beauty and necessity of engaging with one of mankind’s oldest tools of communication. Like other readers here, I think the guide was great for making art and projects with others and also learning about the properties of our surroundings, but I’d want more tips on preventing molds and preserving the paint made, especially for the purpose of sharing them with others. Rosemary much like other herbs are a common natural dye used for fabric, making it just as durable for creating inks. Every summer my mom and I go blueberry picking in the Alaskan mountains and fill our freezers with endless berries.

NPR “The book is full of inspiration and takes a lot of the mystery out of ink making, at least at its simplest level. On a snowy day in 2017 I took my first stroll along the West Toronto Railpath with the artist Jason Logan. Logan shares his tips and recipes on hand-making inks and foraging in his book Make Ink, in his newsletter The Colour, and in the documentary The Colour of Ink (out in spring of 2022). At this point, you can either rinse the excess dye from your fabric, or you can leave it for a few days before rinsing, which might help retain more colour.

We marvelled at the gentle way the snow blanketed the plants and the dance of dormant vines along the fence. It was challenging, surprising, emotional and so eye opening to see how many things produced vibrant color. This is part of the reason that the inks he makes are nontoxic, safe for his kids—and everyone else’s—to use. The outer layer and the bright green center produced a beautiful coral ink color that dries into a soft pink. What this book provides are some initial guidelines, a few basic recipes, but most importantly - it provides you with the permission to just play, and probably fail, but have fun doing it anyway.

you can learn about the history of ink going back to ancient Chinese ink making until the present day. Each ink has its own personality, unique smell and texture – when they meet on the page it is a whole different alchemy to other inks.

I expected the color would work much like the regular orange, but to my surprise the results were very different.

If you’re using a dry pigment as a base, you’ll need to use more binder (usually 1 teaspoon per 2-ounce (60 ml) bottle). There were many such discoveries: the vibrant red from the pokeberry plant, or the gentle pink tones extracted from safflower petals and rosehip. You'll learn how to forage for materials such as soot, rust, peach pits and walnuts and how to mix, test and transform them into your very own rich, vibrant inks.
