About this deal

These three shapes can be used decoratively and as alternative shapes for belt or strap holes. They are only found as drive punches. Diamond/Crescent/Concho/etc. A leather stitching punch is a metal tool with a group of round punches grouped in a straight line. When making holes along a leather’s edge that will be used for running leather lacing through, it is helpful to have the holes both be a consistent size, and a consistent distance between each other.

This table is for illustration purposes only. The price column represents the total one would pay to punch holes. For “pliers,” that means just the price of the pliers without replacement tubes or anvils. For “drive” and “screw” it’s the price of the tool plus additional items needed to use that tool, and so on.Hit it With an Appropriate Hammer: This might be a hammer, mallet, or maul, depending on preference and specific type of punch. Lacing is similar to hand stitching but instead of a thread, you use leather strips. Since leather strips are much heavier than threads, the holes for lacing should be much bigger than regular stitching holes. That is the main difference between lacing and leather stitching in terms of punching holes. A leather ventilator punch is a metal tool that punches a group of round holes into leather material. They have a solid steel hitting end, and a cutting end with several, usually about 6, small, round punches mounted in a generally circular pattern. Buttonhole, also known as keyhole or tailed, punches produce a round hole with a small slit off to one side. These are used with button studs or ball head rivets that slide into the hole and then slip into the slit to keep the flap closed. Oval/Square/Teardrop The punch is lined up and rested on the leather where it will make the hole. Then, a mallet, hammer, or maul is used to strike the top of the punch. The force of the strike pushes the punch through the material. The result is a, smooth, clean hole punched into the leather.

Leather stitching punches are quite popular and often essential to make some leather products. Leather stitching punches are all commonly used for the same purpose: mark/pierce the stitch line to enable you to handstitch leather in a consistent way. Oblong Leather Punches

Leather round strap end punches are used for cutting the rounded ends of straps and belts. They work by placing the punch over the end of the leather material that is to be cut, then striking the punch with a mallet, hammer, or maul. The result is a semi-circular cut. Hand stitching leather requires us to pre-punch the leather before the stitching process. The needles used in hand stitching leather have dull tips. This protects the leather from scratching and is safer for the leathercrafter. Also leather is a strong material and even the sharper needles can’t penetrate the leather too easily. A leather belt hole punch is a T-shaped drive punch with multiple punch heads spaced evenly in a line across the top of the “T.” These are used just like a regular drive punch but they create four holes at once and are used to punch the holes in the billet end of a belt, as the name implies. They come in a small range of small diameters and are best used for rivets, screws, grommets, or belt holes. Multiple sets of pliers are needed to cover the full range of possible punch diameters. Quality pliers will last long, and the punches are replaceable and interchangeable. They are available is different sizes so the proper size can be selected based on the needed sizes of the hole and the button stud hardware that will be used. Here’s how it works:

A leather hand sewing punch is used to punch small, round holes into leather. They are usually made of stainless steel, with two grips, a punching surface, and a punch tip. The punching surface is generally circular shaped and rotatable, with about 6 differently-sized holes of differing sizes.Prepare the Surface: Place a PVC mat or some scrap leather underneath the piece of the leather we are punching to protect the tip of punching tools. Slot hole punches are helpful when making holes to run straps through, such as in bag or case making work. Here’s how it looks and how to use it: A round drive punch is set onto the leather it will cut, then hit or “driven” with a hammer, mallet, or maul. The force generated but the hit drives the cutting end through the leather. This creates a hole in the leather and a small leather circular piece that used to fill what is now the hole. Similar to belts, straps used on a bag or long wallet often require you to finish the end of the strap into a specific shape. In that case, you can use the smaller sizes of the strap end punches. While these cuts can also be made by hand, using a punch generally leads to faster, more precise, and more consistent results.

Ventilator punches make it easy to punch multiple small, grouped holes in leather goods where air flow can be helpful. This is often seen in bags and cases where air flow can be helpful, and sometimes shoes. Start with the same setup as a drive punch (work surface, hard surface, cutting mat/board, leather). Select a punch diameter and ensure it is securely screwed into the base. Holding the tool perpendicular to the workpiece, place the cutting end on the leather and push straight down into the leather using your hand like you would with an awl.

Types of Leather Punches

Trace punches are most popular for harness work, though can be useful for a variety of cutting/punching needs based on their unique shape. Multiple sizes are available for use based on preference and what might work best for your project. Rotary punches are a little different. They are lined up over the area where the hole is to be punched, then they are squeezed, comprising the punch into the leather, resulting in a hole. When a hole of a different size is needed, the cutting blade mechanism is rotated, until the desired cutting size is lined up. Leather rotary punches are manually operated, hand-held metal tools with multiple hole-sized punches used to make holes in leather material. The punches are usually arranged around a rotatable, circular “turret”. There is often an integrated surface for the punches to much onto when cutting. This is the most common punch people often picture when thinking of leather punches. Simple tools can make the leather punching process easy and effective. There are specialized tools for different punching needs. Let’s explore some of the most popular types and how they can be helpful in the shop. Leather Round Strap End Punch Leather Hole Punch
